The Birkenhead Drill

In 1852, the British troopship H.M.S. Birkenhead was traveling to South Africa when she hit a ledge and foundered. On board were more than seven hundred men, women, and children. With only twenty minutes left before she would sink, the decision was made to place all women and children aboard the few life boats. The men would remain behind and face the man-eating sharks circling the disaster. Hundreds of men drowned or were eaten alive in full view of their children, but not a single woman or child perished that day. In past years, this story was known by every schoolboy and girl. Now, you can learn about the Birkenhead through this stirring collection of survivor accounts. By Douglas W. Phillips. Paperback. 83 pgs.Click here to purchase.>

Using inexpensive household or hardware store materials, your boys can construct bang-up devices with the help of this step-by-step guide. With a strong emphasis on safety, the book gives tips on troubleshooting, explains the physics behind the projects, and profiles famous scientists and extraordinary experimenters. Handbook of Knots

Once upon a time, a man’s ability to tie a proper knot could determine whether or not he would put dinner on the table. Knots were part of daily life for Americans. Fishermen, pioneers, and others depended on their ability to tie a proper knot for their own safety and survival. Every boy should know how to tie a knot. Not just one knot, but all kinds of them. The Handbook of Knots, written by world famous knot tyer Des Pawson, illustrates in rich primary colors how to tie 7 styles and 564 variations of knots. A more practical and fun book would be hard to find. Paperback. 160 pgs. Click here to purchase.

Boyhood and Beyond

Modern culture has produced a generation of dishonest, unproductive, and weak-willed men. In Boyhood and Beyond, Bob Schultz urges boys to overcome sloth, pain, and covetousness and to embrace authority and responsibility. Schultz further encourages boys to delight in God’s Word and to be gentle to their sisters — to prepare them to be fathers and leaders. Includes study questions following each chapter. Thoughts For Young Men

There are four great temptations that plague most young men: sloth, lust, love of pleasure, and peer pressure. J.C. Ryle, the last of the great Puritans, tackles each of these subjects with a tenderness and tact which is unsurpassed. First written toward the end of the nineteenth century, it remains to this day the most relevant and helpful book on the subject in print. I was first introduced to Ryle about fifteen years ago, and he remains my favorite teacher on personal holiness. Foreword by Doug Phillips. Click here to purchase.

Sargent York

There was a time when Sergeant Alvin C. York was a household name in America. After World War I, this relatively unknown Tennessee soldier was thrust into the annals of history. People wanted to know all about the shy, quiet Christian soldier who "captured the whole German army." Yet, in one short generation, this remarkable man has been forgotten, in large part because the values he stood for have been discarded by those who educate our nation's children. Sergeant York was a man with such a simple, unflappable, child-like faith that he trusted God while looking death in the eye. Children who read this book will have an opportunity to imagine what it was like to trust God in the midst of seemingly insurmountable odds. Edited by Tom Skeyhill and "Little Bear" Wheeler. Little Bear's Outdoor Adventure Guide for the All-American Boy

“Little Bear” Wheeler, an evangelist and dear buddy of mine, has given the boys of America a very special treat — the ultimate guide to snares, trapping, skinning, and survival in the outdoors. My boys have literally mutilated their books while toting them around and planning their latest escapade. This practical how-to manual gives detailed instructions complete with illustrations for a multitude of outdoor adventures including starting a fire with flint and steel, tracking and silent stalking like the Indians, using the stars as a compass, and building an outdoor shelter. Also includes interesting anecdotal stories. By Richard “Little Bear” Wheeler. Paperback. 198 pgs. Click here to purchase.

The Letters and Lessons of Teddy Roosevelt for His Sons

Imagine what it would have been like to have had Theodore Roosevelt for a father. Here is a bold adventurer, an insatiable hunter, an audacious politician, and also a daddy who loved to play with toys on the floor of the White House. Roosevelt simply adored his children, four of whom were boys, each of whom he was intent on turning into a man of action. He once commented that his own father was the greatest man he ever knew. His commitment to being the same example for his sons was evident not only in the remarkable globe-trotting adventures on which they accompanied him, but also in the copious letters that he wrote to them, many of which communicated deep truths about manhood, Christianity, and courage. Although the message affected each boy differently, Roosevelt’s words are fascinating clues into the life of a man who vigorously sought to balance leadership and fatherhood. In this, our second volume of the “Profiles in Fatherhood” series, I have collected some of the most interesting letters and lessons from T.R. to his boys as an inspiration to modern fathers to embrace with vigor their charge to raise up manly sons. Edited and Compiled by Doug Phillips. Click here to purchase.

The Bible Lessons of John Quincy Adams for His Son

Historian David McCullough has described President John Quincy Adams as one of the most principled and certainly most intelligent men ever to occupy the White House. Born in 1767, Adams entered his country’s service while a mere lad as secretary to the Russian Embassy and remained through life a public servant, filling successively the posts of secretary, ambassador, United States Senator, Secretary of State, President, and finally Representative in Congress. This station he filled from 1831 until the moment of his death, while rising to address Congress on February 23, 1848. However, all of these remarkable achievements are secondary to his role as father. Though a busy man, Adams made it his priority to study the Bible and to train his son to love God’s Holy Word. His example stands out for all men as a shepherd who loved his family flock. When I first read President Adam’s Bible study lessons to his son, I was amazed at the tremendous detail and the depth of his biblical knowledge. Edited and Compiled by Doug Phillips. Paperback. 91 pgs. Click here to purchase.

Henty Series

In my own family, we have discovered that G.A. Henty’s nineteenth century historical fiction has helped me to accomplish three important goals for my children: First, it has cultivated a passion for reading (my eldest currently devours one or two of these books every week). Second, Henty has motivated my children to love history and pursue with passion the study of the providence of God in the affairs of man (we regularly discuss the Henty histories at the dinner table). Third, the constant emphasis on boys as protectors of women and children has reinforced, for the Henty readers in my family, a love for God-ordained biblical distinctions between the sexes.
